1 Samuel 1: Battling Barrenness

Sunday, 7 Feb 2010

44:14 minutes (25.31 MB)

Israel is in a bad way. Their enemies are invading the land and the people are doing what is right in their own eyes. God raised us a man called Samuel but this chapter is about his 'mammy'. She confronted her own barrenness and in the process, God answered her prayers and gave her a son. Sometimes the Lord allows barrenness for His purpose. We seek Him more and our true heart is revealed; our desires are purified. Our petition soon becomes our dedication.

1 Samuel 2 and 3

Sunday, 14 Feb 2010

64:42 minutes (37.02 MB)

1 Samuel 4 and 5: Que Sera Sera

Sunday, 21 Feb 2010

43:54 minutes (25.13 MB)

Eli sits in his chair waiting for the judgement God has promised. He is a fatalist completely refusing to discharge his High Priestly duties in regards to his evil children. In this lesson we learn how patient and in control God really is. We see men, superstitious to the hilt, depending on symbols and lucky charms instead of on the true and living God. Though it is dark, the dawn will soon break.

1 Samuel 6 and 7: Getting Back to God

Sunday, 28 Feb 2010

47:58 minutes (27.45 MB)

These 2 chapters catalogue the gradual return of the people of Israel to their God. It all starts with God miraculously intervening with the cows!! Then, we see the people's estimation and understanding of the glory and 'apartness' of God increasing. Finally there is repentance and confession. They once again serve the Lord alone.  In all this story is a great encouragement to come back to the Lord if we have wandered away and hardened our hearts.

1 Samuel 8: Royalist Rebels

Sunday, 7 Mar 2010

50:31 minutes (28.91 MB)

Samuel is old and he has made his sons judges in Israel. They are not much better than those of Eli, only that, their vice is money and so pervert their office. The Elders, inspired by the people, make a correct observation but draw a wrong conclusion by asking for a king. Tired of having God as their leader they prefer someone they can see, someone they can idolize. They desire to be like the nations around them.  God's people feel the same pressures today.  We want a charismatic leader we can follow. We want the church to take its lead from the world around us.

1 Samuel 9 and 10: Head 'n Shoulders

Sunday, 14 Mar 2010

51:57 minutes (29.72 MB)

Saul is the king that will be chosen. He is the ideal candidate humanly speaking -tall, rich and handsome. However we know little about his spiritual credentials.   We see the Lord's hand in how all the events in this chapter bring Saul to the prophet Samuel.  Even though the people did not want the Lord's king, He is still in control of their 'second choice'. Finally Saul is anointed for the task and God gives him a new heart. When it comes to his coronation, he is found hiding in the baggage. We get a sense that Saul will be a complex character.

1 Samuel 11 and 12: Deal or No Deal

Sunday, 21 Mar 2010

48:50 minutes (27.94 MB)

Ever get tired fighting the same battles? The men of Jabesh Gilead felt like that and they knew they needed help to be delivered from Nahash the Ammonite.  He wanted to half blind them and humiliate them much like our adversary the devil desires for us.  Saul comes from the field to the rescue.  The Holy Spirit empowers him again and enables him to defeat the enemy. Samuel then reminds the people that it's never to late to turn to God.

1 Samuel 13: I just had to do it.

Sunday, 28 Mar 2010

51:53 minutes (29.69 MB)

Saul had started off his reign with a great military victory due to the Lord's help. In a bold and courageous move his son Jonathan attacks the Philistines. The Philistines are, in turn, extremely angry and set themselves in battle array against Israel. Despite now having a professional army, the people are frightened and are deserting, forgetting about God's deliverances  in the past.  Meanwhile, Saul waits for Samuel to arrive. He waits and waits and eventually foolishly performs a sacrifice in direct disobedience to God. This act of disobedience costs him his kingdom.

1 Samuel 14: Who Dares Wins

Sunday, 11 Apr 2010

57:33 minutes (26.34 MB)

This story displays the remarkable results that come about when someone gets fed up being under the oppression of the enemy and decides to do something about it. Jonathan with his armourbearer go and successfully attack the enemy. The LORD responds to their faith and miraculously assists their exploits with an earthquake. However, in the chapter we see Saul who is indecisive and insecure. The main lesson we can learn is as William Carey stated:- we should 'expect great things from God and attempt great things for God'.

1 Samuel 15: Obedience in part is no obedience at all

Saturday, 17 Apr 2010

48:33 minutes (22.23 MB)

God asked Saul to do something very important. He is to be God's instrument of judgement against the Amalekites. Saul obeys to a certain extent. He spares some of the best spoil from the battle for himself, and keeps King Agag alive instead of totally annihilating the Amalekites. The consequences of his actions mark the death knell for his kingdom. We discover here that partially obeying God is equal to total disobedience. God doesn't want our money, time, effort and devotion if it comes at the expense of obeying Him.

1 Samuel 16: Trust is in the Details

Sunday, 2 May 2010

46:48 minutes (21.43 MB)

Samuel grieved after Saul yet God asked him to move on and anoint the next king. Although Samuel knew the direction of God's will, he did not know the details. It's not the devil that is in the details, it is trusting Jesus with the details that we need.

1 Samuel 17: Wee Giant Killer

Sunday, 9 May 2010

45:15 minutes (20.72 MB)

1 Samuel 18.1-16: Friends

Sunday, 23 May 2010

49:46 minutes (22.78 MB)

Jonathan and David had a special relationship as men. They are friends even soul mates. Their friendship reveals some aspects that deep friendships have: similarities, commitment, sacrifice, generosity, humility, respect and affection. Ultimately our eyes shift to the Lord Jesus. He was called the ‘friend of sinners.’ He is the perfect Friend in that He laid down His life for His enemies. There is no greater love than this.

1 Samuel 21: Situational Ethics

Sunday, 13 Jun 2010

49:14 minutes (22.39 MB)
David is a fugitive and runs to Ahimelech the priest. The priest provides for his needs but in this story we see David surprisingly deceptive. In fact as we see him operating in the flesh - lying for his own convenience. Then, he travels down to Gath where Goliath was from. Instead on resting on the Lord, he pretends to be mad to save his own skin. Where has the giant killer gone? We need to consider ‘is right always right?’ Does ‘what is right’ change with the situation? In this teaching we will be addressing this particular issue. N.B.

1 Samuel 22 & 23: Evil- Know, Grow, and Show

Sunday, 20 Jun 2010

55:53 minutes (38.38 MB)

Bad things sometimes happen to good people. The question of why God allows evil is an ancient one. In this section we see how David’s lie led to the murder of many people. Nevertheless we can observe that God is sovereign in all He does. He can use evil to accomplish His purposes. We must learn not to interpret bad stuff in isolation. God’s good character remains intact. We can KNOW, GROW and SHOW when evil comes our way.

1 Samuel 24: Leaving the Cave of Offence

Sunday, 27 Jun 2010

43:47 minutes (21.99 MB)
David is still on the run and in God’s plan, God leads Saul right into the cave where David is hiding. David gives us a wonderful example of how we should treat someone who has wronged us. He doesn’t take shortcuts to becoming King by killing his enemy. Instead he shows him mercy. His conscience drives him out of the cave and in a spirit of humility and total vulnerability he confronts Saul. Instead of accusing him he tries to soften the blow by covering Saul’s sins. Saul responds well and confesses his own weaknesses. Yet in time, Saul’s repentance would prove false.

1 Samuel 25: Beauty and the Loser

Sunday, 4 Jul 2010

47:26 minutes (23.1 MB)
Despite the calm and coolness displayed by David dealing with King Saul in the last section, we see here how human David is. The triumphs of yesterday do not guarantee victories of tomorrow. David’s pride almost caused him to commit an act of revenge. Thankfully, a wise discerning lady prevented disaster. Abigail, though married to a fool of a husband, displays great wisdom. Are you in a difficult marriage? Feel your partner won’t listen? This section of God’s Word will certainly give you help.

1 Samuel 26: Not Again

Sunday, 11 Jul 2010

40:47 minutes (19.77 MB)
'Not again'- ever said that? We sometimes say this to ourselves but more often it is concerning the behaviour or attitude of others. This chapter, though it is very similar to chapter 24, has one vital distinction: David actually doesn't repeat the same mistake of 'taking a wee dig' at his enemy Saul. The Ziphites are stirring again; David's peers are encouraging him to take wrong shortcuts; Saul is saying sorry for the umpteenth time; but David is trusting that the LORD will vindicate him. Our heavenly Father sees our repetitive sins. His mercy endures forever.

1 Samuel 27: David's Depressed Decision Making

Sunday, 18 Jul 2010

52:24 minutes (25.23 MB)
The Spiritual life can sometimes flow in cycles. In the last chapter David is in top form - forgiving his enemies and trusting God’s care and protection. Then he starts thinking ‘in his heart’. David becomes depressed and then he makes a string of very bad decisions. Initially leaving Israel and heading into Philistine country seems to go well; His old enemy Saul leaves off chasing him. However as he leads his compromised lifestyle, the illusion that he in control begins to fade.

1 Samuel 28: It's All Over

Sunday, 25 Jul 2010

58:19 minutes (28.25 MB)
In this chapter the story switches back again to King Saul. He is in a difficult situation and God is not speaking to him. So he decides to call the pyshic hotline. Suddenly in the midst of the apparent seance, Samuel appears and basically tells Saul that his kingdom is finished and so is he. Fear grips Saul completely. His last supper is some veal, eaten with a medium while his enemies wait some 8 miles up the road. This passage reminds us of the reality of the afterlife; sin untreated will lead to damaged lives and damned souls.

Sunday, 1 Aug 2010

54:25 minutes (26.53 MB)
Compromise often leads us into a difficult place where we end up on a collision course with God and His people. David found himself in that position, but thanks to God’s mercy there was a way out. Coming home to Ziklag he was meet with devastation and the sad reality that all he had had been taken away. This was his wakeup call from the life of concession he had been living in enemy territory. He began to seek God by and the Lord answered him and brought about restoration on David’s life.
